I have no idea how cigarette prices in Belgium compare with those in Germany or Switzerland, but as Switzerland is not in the EU, if you were to buy these there, it.

We are travelling to Belgium, Germany & Switzerland and have been asked by a friend to bring back cigarettes. We are travelling through Eurotunnel with a caravan. Could anybody tell me where would be the best and cheapest place to buy cigarettes and how many are we allowed to bring back. I have no idea how cigarette prices in Belgium compare with those in Germany or Switzerland, but as Switzerland is not in the EU, if you were to buy these there, it would be the lower, NON-EU customs limits that would apply for importation into the UK (or whichever EU Member State you enter from Switzerland), which are set out here: hmrc.gov.uk/customs/…arrivingnoneu.htm If you purchase tax-paid cigarettes in Germany, Belgium or France, on the other hand, then the rules for introduction into the UK from other members of the EU are set out here: hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriving/arrivingeu.htm I would imagine the best place to buy them would be at one of the hypermarkets in Calais (France) before taking the Eurotunnel on the way back; but if by any chance you were passing by there, the best place to buy them in Belgium would be Adinkerke which is just over the border from Dunkerque. While the price is the same wherever you buy in Belgium, shops in Adinkerke (and Brugge) specialise in sales to UK tobacco tourists and offer favourable rates of exchange for payment in GBP; and in addition, they stock brands that are consumed in the UK and which you might not find in a normal supermarket. That advice is based on the fact that being reimbursed for the cost of any amount of cigarettes would make this a SALE, but in practice (and I speak as an ex-UK Customs officer!) you are unlikely to attract attention if only bringing in a couple of cartons. In law, there is no limit - under EU rules which the UK is bound by - on the introduction in one Member State of tax-paid goods purchased in another, which includes tobacco products purchased in normal shops and supermarkets, AS LONG AS THESE ARE FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION and NOT RESALE. The official information in the HMRC link provided says, "Although there are NO LIMITS on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from EU countries, customs officials are more likely to ask you questions if you have more than the following..." (800 cigarettes). Even if Customs might suspect that you have greater quantities than the declared cartons, concealed in your car/caravan, and of course can also carry out searches on a random basis, presumably they aren't going to find any additional cartons, so there should be no problem from the quantity aspect. And even if they suspect that you might be going to get paid for cigarettes which are within the guideline quantities for (someone else's!) personal consumption, that level of suspicion could not be translated into seizures. So unless perhaps you have a record of selling excisable products, or were unlucky enough to acquire counterfeit cigarettes (ALL counterfeits being prohibited goods), I don't see that you have anything to worry about as long as you remain within the limits. Qaminari has some sound advice there, although you should bear in mind that these days the Customs checks are carried out by the UK Border Force (or whatever today's name for it is) and that they have to satisfy Theresa May's rantings about being an effective border force - anyone who is a regular user of Eurotunnel will have noted how the checks UK-bound seem to forever get worse and slower (and a total contrast to those going the other way - into Schengenland too). However, I would question whether a diversion even just to Adinkerke is worth the effort and expense for the purchase of just a minimal number of cartons. Don't forget that UK-brand cigarettes are sold in the Eurotunnel terminal at Calais free of French VAT (but admittedly with an enhanced mark-up) and there are sometimes special offers.
